Do not treat every unchecked item as a ranking factor. The purpose is to maintain accurate information, comply with current guidelines, improve customer usefulness, and measure outcomes.
Why this matters: Incorrect representation can confuse customers and create policy risks. Fix eligibility concerns before cosmetic optimization. Check Google’s business representation guidelines and the service-area rules when the setup is unclear.
Follow Google’s verification instructions for any outstanding verification step.
Use the Categories Guide for the selection process itself.
See the Photo Guide and Google’s photo and video instructions for the detail.
Google publishes review collection guidance and a user-contributed content policy.
Google documents what each figure counts in its performance report definitions; its call metric counts call-button clicks, not confirmed conversations.
Record the following:
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Business / location | |
| Review date | |
| Reviewer | |
| Profile status | |
| Major changes since last review | |
| Data period reviewed | |
| Main issues found | |
| Highest-priority action | |
| Owner and due date | |
| Next review date |
| Frequency | Recommended work |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Monitor new reviews, customer questions, and visible issues. |
| Monthly | Check core details, services, links, photos, and performance. |
| Quarterly | Conduct a deeper category, website, competitor, and lead-quality review. |
| On change | Update hours, address, phone, services, ownership, or operating details promptly. |
| After a restriction | Follow the official review process and document corrective actions. |
Use three practical priority levels:
Eligibility problems, inaccurate address or name, duplicate-profile complications, suspended or restricted status, broken contact paths, or information that materially misleads customers.
Irrelevant categories, incomplete service details, outdated photos, inconsistent website information, or weak appointment paths.
Nonessential cosmetic improvements that do not affect accuracy, accessibility, customer trust, or the ability to contact the business.
The exact priority depends on the business. A broken booking link may be high priority for an appointment-based practice even if the profile itself is otherwise complete.
FAQ
What the checklist can and cannot do for a local business.
No. It helps maintain an accurate and useful profile but cannot guarantee rankings.
There is no universal number that guarantees results. Focus on genuine customer feedback and a useful, representative set of photos.
Only make changes that are accurate, eligible, and useful. Some fields may not apply to every business.
Yes, as a framework, but each location’s information, services, hours, photos, and eligibility must be reviewed individually.
Fix eligibility problems and broken customer contact routes first. Use the audit guide to organize and prioritize the rest.
