Google Business Profile Audit: Complete Local Listing Review

A Google Business Profile audit is a structured review of a listing and the customer journey connected to it. The purpose is to identify inaccurate information, policy risks, missed opportunities, technical problems, and conversion barriers.

An audit is not simply a checklist of fields to complete. A profile may contain all available information and still struggle to generate leads because the business is not relevant to a query, competition is strong, the website is weak, or the customer experience does not meet expectations.

What a GBP Audit Should Answer

A useful audit should establish:

Step 1: Collect Baseline Information

Before editing anything, record:

Save screenshots or notes where useful, respecting privacy and account security. A baseline helps distinguish the current state from later changes. Choose a consistent comparison period, such as the latest 28 days against the preceding 28 days, and note unusual conditions like holiday closures, a broken phone line, a website launch, or an advertising change.

Step 2: Check Eligibility and Representation

Review the current Google business representation guidelines and confirm the profile represents a real, eligible business.

Investigate:

High priority: suspected ineligibility, misleading address information, duplicate-profile conflicts, or an active suspension or restriction. Do not attempt to fix policy concerns by creating replacement profiles, using fake addresses, or adding keywords to the business name.

Step 3: Audit Core Information

Compare every important field with a reliable source, such as the business’s actual operating details and official website.

FieldWhat to verifyCommon issue
Business nameReal-world usageAdded keywords or slogans
Primary categoryMain activityToo broad or inaccurate
Additional categoriesGenuine secondary activitiesIrrelevant categories
Address / service areaActual operationMisleading or outdated details
PhoneReaches the businessDisconnected or wrong number
WebsiteRelevant destinationBroken or unrelated page
HoursCurrent availabilityHoliday hours not updated
ServicesActual offeringsOutdated or invented services
DescriptionAccurate explanationUnsupported claims or keyword stuffing
Booking linksWorking customer pathBroken or outdated link

Record the current value, verified correct value, evidence, recommended action, priority, owner, and due date.

Step 4: Audit Categories and Services

Evaluate the primary category against the business’s main activity. Additional categories should reflect meaningful services, not every related keyword. Check service listings for accuracy and consistency with the website.

Do not assume that a competitor’s category choices are correct for the audited business. Competitor research can inform questions, but the final decision must reflect the client’s real-world operation. Related resource: the Google Business Profile Categories Guide.

Step 5: Audit Photos and Visual Trust

Assess whether the profile has a representative set of authentic images. Check the exterior or entrance where relevant, customer-facing spaces, team, products, facilities, and completed work.

Flag:

Do not score the profile solely by photo count. Consider whether the photos help a customer recognize the business and understand what to expect. Related resource: the Google Business Profile Photo Guide.

Step 6: Audit Reviews and Responses

Review the recency and content of genuine customer feedback. Check whether the business has a responsible process for requesting reviews and responding to them.

Look for:

Do not treat review count or average rating as a complete measure of service quality. Reviews can be one input in the audit, but the business should respond to the underlying customer experience. Google sets the rules in its user-contributed content policy.

Step 7: Test the Website and Conversion Path

Click the website link from the profile and complete the main customer journey on mobile and desktop.

Test:

A profile can attract relevant visitors but fail to generate inquiries if the landing page is confusing or broken. Record each failure with steps to reproduce it.

Step 8: Audit Local Website Alignment

Review how the profile connects to the broader site. Check that:

Do not add structured data or city pages simply to manufacture signals. Accuracy and usefulness come first.

Step 9: Audit Tracking and Lead Quality

Compare available profile reporting with website analytics, call records, booking tools, and CRM data. Google’s performance report definitions explain what each figure actually counts, and its call metric counts call-button clicks rather than confirmed conversations.

Separate the funnel into:

  1. Visibility or discovery
  2. Profile interaction
  3. Website session
  4. Contact or booking action
  5. Qualified lead
  6. Customer or revenue outcome

Investigate discrepancies. For example, profile interactions may rise while qualified leads remain flat. That may indicate a conversion issue, a change in lead mix, spam, or a mismatch between the services advertised and customer needs. Avoid claiming that a profile generated a customer unless the tracking evidence supports that conclusion.

Step 10: Investigate Ranking or Visibility Problems

If the audit was triggered by a ranking drop, document the exact query, location, date, and search surface. Results can differ by location and query.

Check:

Do not infer a suspension from a ranking drop alone, and do not promise that a particular edit will restore rankings. For a deeper diagnosis, use the not-ranking guide.

Audit Scorecard

Rate each area as Pass, Needs attention, or Not applicable. Add evidence and an action rather than relying on an unexplained numeric score.

Prioritization Framework

Priority 1: Critical

Eligibility concerns, suspension or restrictions, misleading information, duplicate-profile conflicts, wrong contact details, and broken primary conversion actions.

Priority 2: Important

Inaccurate categories or services, outdated hours, poor website alignment, missing key service information, and review-response problems.

Priority 3: Improvement

Photo coverage, useful profile details, measurement refinements, and routine process improvements that do not outweigh critical issues.

Prioritize based on actual business impact. For an appointment-based business, a broken booking link may be critical even when the rest of the profile looks complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What an audit can establish, and what it cannot.

Still have a question?

Can a GBP audit guarantee higher rankings?

No. It can identify issues and opportunities, but local rankings depend on multiple factors outside the auditor’s control.

No. Verify the facts and consider eligibility, customer usefulness, risk, and business relevance before changing anything.

Use monthly checks for key details and a deeper quarterly audit, or audit after major business changes, restrictions, or unexplained performance shifts.

It can identify plausible causes and evidence, but ranking systems are complex. Avoid claiming a single cause unless the evidence supports it.

The checklist tells you what to check. An audit records what you found, explains the impact, and assigns the fix to a person and a date.
